20 Days back with the help of my friends I started working on my 3 year old dream.
Okie first I will tell you what I dreamt of.
Normally whenever I see a a person begging (the word which I don't want to use often) I feel so sad about their situation. So when I was in 1yr in IIT Roorkee, in NSS my seniors asked us to tell what new activities we want to have in NSS. Then I gave them idea of doing something for those innocent people roaming around in market for alms. Whatever may be the reason that didn't come true in that year. Later I myself got involved in other activities of NSS forgetting about this idea.
Again after 3 long years when I am in 4yr and have 250 member vibrant NSS Force with me, I asked my juniors to suggest some new activities. This time some of them suggested same idea which I thought of 3 years back. I felt so happy and started working on it immediately.
14th February, the day when the whole world was celebrating Valentine’s day and groups like Ram Sene were getting angry on each and every Boy & Girl pair they see on road, without getting understood real relationship between them.
This day I along with my friends Saumya & Kavita went to the market(Civil Lines) and met innocent angels asking for alms. We talked to them for an hour and found that they are interested in studying. We were so happy to hear positive response. You know, one of them, called Ataulla was even able to read hindi letters without ‘matra’. We found brightness in his face while reading. He himself offered us to meet their parents and convince them to allow these angels to come to us to study.
We reached their huts. Everyone in the Slum and villagers residing in the village were looking at us in wonder. Many angels’ parents were out on their business. But those who were there accepted our proposal of allowing their angels to study with us daily after 4pm, the time when they return from their business. We were so happy, and asked all the angels available there to come to us next day to study with us.
Next day onwards we started teaching them. Our main aim of teaching them is to develop self-respect in them, to discourage them from begging and motivate them to study or at least to do any job but not begging. Many students of NSS IITR and some volunteers regularly went to that village to teach them. The village, Telliwala, is 5-6 km away from IITR campus. Their grasping power is so high that we always wonder how these angels power is going waste. But at some corner of my heart I was satisfied that there are some people to support me in carrying out this program successfully. As soon as I got idea of conducting this program, my friend Kaustav Prakash, who is convener of Cognizance’09, technical festival of IIT Roorkee agreed to sponsor stationary and gave his helping hand immediately.
This continued for 16 long continuous days. When I look back after 10days I found that I missed my academic classes for 10days. But I didn’t feel bad. Even though I should not have bunked classes, for great cause I have had to. But after 16 days of teaching we observed one great obstacle to teach them, their ill- health. In the starting one angel was suffering from Chicken Pox. Later it started spreading to others. But they were not going to hospital and were not even taking proper care (may be they were innocent). Today we observed that 7-8 children are suffering from fever and are in preliminary stages of chicken pox. We tried to segregate those children suffering from fever from others. But those children were so interested in studying that it became almost impossible and we thought of suspending classes for some days till all become healthy. (One more supplementary reason is due to Holi Vacations many volunteers are going home.) And immediately we contacted some doctors and made arrangements to take them to hospital tomorrow.
Today I am feeling sad about this interruption in the program but hope we will make a mark in their lives soon.
In this way my 3 years old dream came true partially but I feel it is just a start. One day these angels will come out of that situation and become path breakers.
